Second Life Image Editing Pt1

Hi folks! I’ve recently posted up a video on Flickr showing a quickie on the kind of editing I do on my pictures. With that in mind I wanted to do a few more challenging images with complicated editing to make a series of SL image editing tutorials.

Keep in mind, I’m not a pro with editing images, I always kinda… mess up, undo and figure things out. The biggest tip I can share about photoshoping is really – practice! I’ve been DIY-ing with Photoshop for years and years now… so all it takes is patience and just that. With Secondlife shots is that everyone has their own unique technique. You might like to shoot with shadows and then edit from there, you might like to green screen or take the full image in world. Whatever your method is, I hope this tutorial helps you somewhat!

The first series of this tutorial is me giving you basic instructions on photoshop and some tips I’ve learnt along the way. The actual image editing will be highlighted more in future tutorials.

In-World Settings

Firstly, when it in-world settings. I always get asked what settings I use and I kinda think the only advantage I have is that I can actually save a pretty sick large image. Aside from that, my settings are fairly low:

Render Quality : Low
Honestly… since I so rarely take shadow shots, there’s really no reason for me to bump this any higher than a medium.

Shaders
I turn all first 4 shaders on, so I see the glow of certain objects, and… I get bump maps if I have them set on walls etc.

Sliders
LOD of Objects on max, Avatars and Flexiprims on max as well.

Post Process Quality
That is also on high.


Hardware Settings
If you’re taking a shadow shot, I would suggest keeping this at 0px. Apparently the Anti Aliasing causes lines to appear when you take big huge shadow images. At low, 8px or 16px it really doesn’t matter. In fact, occasionally I forget to turn this on, because the image size is big, resizing it in Photoshop automatically gives it an anti alias.

Advanced Menu
On my advanced menu I set High-Res Snapshots and Quiet snapshots to disk, cause I’ll drive everyone on the sim insane if I left it on.

Snapshot
When it comes to saving your photos to disk. I always make sure it’s a .png or .bmp so none of the quality of what you see on screen gets sacrificed or botched during the saving process (which jpg tends to do).

Size wise, I always end up resizing (all these numbers corresponds to width) my final images to about 1000px or even 800px, so I technically can work with anything from 2000px and up. But I usually keep my photoshopped photos on hand for memory, so I like to take them from 4000px to 5000px with constrain properties checked.

And that’s all there is to it with SL Settings!


Photoshop Basics!

So there are some tools in Photoshop you should know. I personally think knowing these makes everyone’s lives easier no matter if you’re using it to create second life clothes, texturing or blogging etc.

Shortcut Keys


If none of your PS Default Keys are changed, these should be the same:

B = Brush Tool

E= Eraser Tool

[ or ] = makes brush size bigger or smaller

Alt or I = Dropper tool, used for selecting colors

Ctrl + S = Saving, which you should do every 10 minutes or so

Ctrl + Z = Undo! Something I wish RL has in general…

Ctrl + C = Copy

Ctrl + V = Paste

Ctrl + T = Free Transform *Great for doing shadows on ground!*
The 2nd last block of tips in this post shows how this is used

Shift + Drag = from 1 document to another, doesn’t change the positioning of what you’re moving/dragging.
(You should try this cause my explanation probably doesn’t make any sense)

Space Bar + Drag = Moving yourself around the document

Pentool

I can go on FOREVER about the pen tool… I love the pen tool and everyone should really really learn it. Illustrator pen tools are a lot more advance, photoshop just uses the most basic pen tool ever. I use this for selecting/cropping/getting rid of stuff and all kinds of things. I would say google some pen tool tips and learn this tool, because it is hella useful and so much more control friendly than any selection tool out there. I’ll cover this more in another tutorial when I actually use it more in editing.

Layer Modes / Blending Modes

I can’t stress how important it is for you to know your layer modes, or at least the very basic few. I assume you do know what Layers is for and how to create new ones. If not please do open up google and find out. So so sooo important D:
I never use dodge and burn if I can help it, just because the color controls on those 2 things are insane. Once you over burn an image, there’s hardly anyway to save yourself (same for dodging) so always use the layer modes to add shadows or light into your image. I’ll explain more in other tutorials though…


Normal
Is exactly what it says, all new layers (unless you duplicated a layer that has a different mode) begins with normal.

Multiply
This is what I use mostly to add shadow layers. Multiply uses the color information of your layer choice and multiplies the layer underneath it with those colors. If this layer was completely black, your image becomes completely black. If you used white, the layer underneath is unchanged.
The “light equivalent” blend mode is Screen

Look at the below pictures for examples of when this kind of blending properties can be useful! Click them for a bigger image!



Soft Light
Soft light can either darken or lighten an image depending on what you’re using. If the color is lighter than 50% grey, it dodges/lightens the layer underneath. If the color is darker than 50% grey, it burns/darkens the layer underneath. This however does not produce a pure black or pure white. Think about this as adding a diffused light to your image, which is why I use this a lot for adding highlights.

Overlay
Overlay is quite like soft light, but harsher – it can produce pure black or pure white at certain combinations. light can either darken or lighten an image depending on what you’re using. If the color is lighter than 50% grey, it dodges/lightens the layer underneath. If the color is darker than 50% grey, it burns/darkens the layer underneath. At the same time, this filter tries its best to preserve the highlights and shadows of the initial base layer.

Color Dodge
Color dodge brightens the layer underneath with the properties of the layer on top. However instead of just adjusting colors, it also adjusts the contrast. So if you’re using black, there is no change on the image. But if you use white, it’s contrasted so brightly it becomes pure white. Grey just does a middle contrast. Any other bright colors does what white does, but it’s also tinted with that color.
The “dark equivalent” is Color Burn

Color
It basically uses the color of your current layer and changes the hue and saturation of the base/under layer. So lets say your base layer is a gray scale image. Using this function allows you to add color to the gray scale without losing its shading.
Occasionally, using lower opacities for this allows you to effectively blend your avatar to the background better. The last block of this post will show you an example of what I did.

If you’re interested in knowing more about blending modes, I suggest going to Photoshop’s Help area (F1) to read more about it. If not, just play around with it and experiment. Knowing these would help you a ton!


First Step: Background

In terms of backgrounds, I’m not great with taking in world shots and even if I do I like to keep a green screen copy so its easy to select just the avatar out of the background to edit it. There are several ways to go about doing backgrounds, and these are some methods I like to use:


SL Images
Take a shot in world as a background, when you’re taking in world environment shots. Try to take a few different angles; you never know which ones work best. Even the tiniest shift makes a huge different.

One place I LOVE is going through this particular flickr group: SL Stock Images
If you ever need an inworld background, likely you can find a ton of stock photos in there. If you’re not a member, definitely join it and use their resources! Remember to credit where credit is due!

Stock Photos
Never ever – please don’t ever google an image and use it as a background. I know its one of the easiest methods but truly as much as we’re all condoning of copybots… this is really the same. Google doesn’t have a copyright filter so the stock images you find there are most likely owned by private individuals.

Are 2 great free stock websites. I own accounts in various stock photo sites to use for schoolwork etc, so if you’re thinking of doing serious photo manips for clients, I’d suggest doing so too.

Prepping a RL Stock Image

I might do a more extensive tutorial on this, but a really basic trick that I learnt a while back on how to make a stock image seem more SL – or at least more hand drawn or cartoony.


Step 1
Fit your background image to your document, in this picture here we haven’t edited its colors or modified anything yet. Duplicate this layer to add Step 2′s effect.


Step 2
Go to Filter > Stylize > Find Edges
It will produce this effect below, basically adding a coloring book like edge to your image.


Step 3
Put this Filtered layer as a soft light or multiply at 50% opacity. It’s a very subtle effect (depending on your opacity level) but it kinda does the trick in making it look cartoony. And I like that edges of certain areas become a lot clearer.

Green Screening

What most of us call Green Screen is actually called Chroma Keying or Chroma Key Compositing. It’s a technique used for layering 2 different images above one another seamlessly. We take a color uncommonly used to place behind our avatars so as to easily crop that out, in most cases this bright neon green — hence why its termed Green Screening! There’s a dozen tutorial on how to green screen properly. Do whichever makes the most sense to you. Ultimately I use 2 methods for something basic like SL, and I’ll show you guys both of them.

First Method: Green Screen & Edge Editing

I use this method either when I’m desperately in need of full control of all edges of the avatar. Which either means there’s a ton of colors or elements in my background image.


Take your Green Screened Image, and click Select > Color Range…

A Color Range box pops up and your cursor immediately turns into a dropper. Click on the green area and increase the fuzziness to as high as you can without affecting the main image. This is easy to set high if there is absolutely no green within your shot, if not your number might be a lot lower. Seeing some things within my image is sheer, I don’t mind the fuzziness taking away some of the green on those sheer elements.

Make sure the Invert checkbox is ticked.

Note: To see what you’re taking away or editing, change the Selection Preview to either Matte White or Matte Black — test this out and you’ll see what I mean.


A selection would have been made once you click ok. Ctrl + C to copy that and Ctrl + V to paste it on a new layer. Place a White background underneath this layer.

At this point your image should still have green edges around you, and mostly around alpha-ed areas like hair. Right click your pasted object layer and click Select Pixels. Go to Select > Inverse to inverse that selection.

Press the delete key 1-2 times and it’d have cleared quite a number of your green edgings.



For the leftover green areas we can clear it out by painting them away. First off, lock your current layer by clicking on the button (in the layer panel) next to Lock. When locked, your layer should have a little lock symbol next to it. This means you can paint on this image without worrying about going out of the lines.

Press your ‘B’ key to head to paintbrush mode. Change the Blending Mode of this brush to Color (like in image below).

Use the dropper tool to select a color you wish to paint the green areas with and just paint over. As you can see in the image some areas have been painted, and some of the sheer areas are still showing up as green. Keep painting over till there’s no more green!


Second Method: Shortcut Green Screening

Most of the time I use this 2nd method, since I use solid colors for background. In the case of this image, the background is so bright that I can use an all white background to speed up by Green Screen process.


Instead of taking 1 Green Screen Image, take that PLUS one more same image, no change in angle or anything. This time, set the background to White or whatever solid color is most prominent in your background.

Place this 2nd Image (with the other color background) as a layer UNDER your Green Screen image.


(Same as above Step 1)
Take your Green Screened Image, and click Select > Color Range…

Ctrl + C to copy from that and Ctrl + V to paste it on a new layer. Hide all your other layers and this is what you should get:

A very quick short cut of how to crop your avatar out!


Free Transform Tool

I didn’t actually use this tool in this image to add a Shadow, but this is super useful!


After you have your avatar entirely edited, or at least Green Screened and taken out from your background. Duplicate a 2nd copy on a new layer and Lock it.


Go to Edit > Fill, the fill will be what your current dropper color is selecting. Or you can click the menu buttons and pick from a few default. I always kinda use Black or Dark Brown for Shadows. If you have locked your layer. It should show up this way:


Press Ctrl + T or go to Edit > Free Transform. The area now has a square bounding box around it, use that to resize the image (Press Shift and then resize will constraint its ratio). Or right click and click Skew – and every corner you click, you can kinda… skew the shadow. Experiment to understand this better!


Blending Mode: Color

Remember earlier when I mentioned the Layer Mode/ Blending Mode color? Here’s an example of how an image looks with and without the color blend:


So this is the image without color blend, the avatar is a peachy color, very different from the background and kinda seems very clear they were taken on 2 different occasions.
(Image should NOT say Color 30%… my layers are messing up on meh D:)

Right click the Layer with your avatar and click Select Pixels.

Go to your background image, Ctrl + C Copy the background and Ctrl + V Paste the copy above your avatar image. Adjust it so it fits perfectly right above your avatar image.
The image below is a sample of what you should have copied out from the background.


Set that copied background Blending Mode/Layer Mode to Color and change the opacity to 30%-50%. Immediately the avatar takes the color properties of the area you copied out and blends it a little better.

Take note, this works because our background is a mass of stars and what not – there is no specific shape or buildings etc – so this technique works. If you have buildings, trees etc, using this technique will make this very very odd.

Final Image Combined All Tools:

What He Wore

Hihi! I’ve been taking a lil break off working and chillaxing around cleaning up my inventory and hoping to get back to the swing of blogging some of those inventory thingies I cleaned out. There’s been so much amazing mesh released lately that I originally made a “Mesh” folder for my inventory but now all of them are sorted into the usual categories I made.

One thing I love about mesh is how much more masculine options we can wear properly now without prims jutting in and out of our bodies crazily. I just wish there was better sizing options cause even with standard sizing, I’m between a xs and a s, not quite a perfect fit. This post shows some items which aren’t exactly made for mens, but they do fit very loose and relaxed, kinda as if you took mens items and put em on, something I’ve been waiting for in SL for a long long time.

What He Wore III

Both hairs come from TuTy’s and I rarely wear black hair or fully flexi hairs, but usually if I do, I like to wear them in this combination. Partly cause black is super forgiving for flexis, blending everything a lot better. This 2 styles I love cause the alpha strands are very well done, and the movement itself inworld is very natural and clean.

The look on the right showcases a great release from JANE, an oversized tee that works great with most belts. I chose one from NotSoBad just cause I’m thrilled that they’re finally making accessories and clothing for SL. The back slouch of this tee is gorgeous and rigged rather well, so it moves very naturally with your avatar. Simple styling with necklaces, a few bracelets and that’s all you need.

The left look features NotSoBad’s t-shirt that I hope one day they offer separates for, as for now the inner longer sleeved shirt comes together with the tee on the top. The cut is great and very realistic to a boys tee which I absolutely love. The jeans is Amerie’s which I flickr lookbooked before, but this version is the female sized one so it fits /a lot/ better although there’s still a lil gap where non-existent booty lies. The side texturing has issues but Amerie has addressed that on her flickr and to be honest I’m not very bothered by it. It looks great from the front and back, and the textures are pretty amazeballs. They do sit very very low, so wear some underpants if you don’t want to randomly flash a stranger.

EPOCH Legend Part IV – Clowning

My final post regarding EPOCH Legend is dedicated to Clowning which ended up being my favorite for various different reasons. One is cause both me and sue are part of creating items for that theme. Secondly, Nyasyousa Oh and Shiroyagi Writer from Picnic created the venue. Both of them have builds and creations I have admired for a very long time. Having the pleasure and honor to work with the two of them for this event was a huge highlight for both me and sue! Finally and the biggest reason of all, some of my favorite items from this event comes from Clowning. The designers for this theme truly pulled out all their big guns, being absolutely creative and fun.

The items on the header image all comes from Clowning, a beautiful white tent from Picnic, which is actually the event space itself, can come in handy for either an open air camping tent, or even tents to use for parties in SL. I love Happy Mood’s Pop Up book as well which has adorable fantasy animals making it an item I love to have out just for displays. The book comes with a few poses to make your avatar seemingly come merge with it, like popping out from a fairy tale. The sheep also comes from Picnic and LOOK it’s wearing socks!! Need I say more about why it’s just simply brilliant?

I created 3 different sets of looks to go with the clowning theme; hopefully you guys will enjoy it! Once again, any item uncredited, feel free to ask me about em. I’ll go back to surling things a lil properly soon, I’ve been operating extremely slow with blogging lately T_T

EPOCH Clowning

The first look is a lil more edgy as I try to edge up Beetlebones‘ Harlequin Mini Dress, sue did an amazing hand drawn glitter texture on the dress and I absolutely love how it looks on the side when the dress poofs up like a little tutu. The skin I’m wearing is My Uglydorothy’s contribution for the event, she did 3 different sets of skin and each of them consist of really interesting clownlike combinations.

The next 2 looks uses the same bodysuit layer from The Secret Store as I love how soft and delicate she managed to make the ruffles look. I wanted to keep a twin like apparel showing both masculine and feminine ways to sport this. Both skins are also from My Uglydorothy.

The masculine version showcases Iruco’s items. A fancy men’s vest and a spiked up mens hairstyle, iruco’s items were a rather interesting take on the clowning theme, not the usual brightly colored clown we see around.
With the more girly one I layered the bodysuit over House of Fox‘s own clowning bodysuit and wore Newreem Waffle (duboo)’s hat which is one of the funnest item I’ve seen made. I don’t quite need to elaborate more since Newreem knows how much I love this :P

EPOCH Clowning

Finally my last look for Clowning and EPOCH in general is a happier clown sporting makeup from Milk Motion, Top from House of Fox – which I /love/ – and shoes from North West! I was surprised at how well this top fits over cold logic’s jumper and the flared pants silhouette makes it appropriate for clowning theme in general.

EPOCH Legend Part III – Beast

The next post for EPOCH Legend goes to Beast, the venue was created by Azure Electricteeth who did an amazing job evoking the dark and primal feel of the word Beast. The entrance is really grand with the words of Beast designers floating about in space, and you walk through a long tunnel into the actual area itself. She creatively blended 2d and 3d for the venue and that was one of my favorite parts of what she did.

Not to forget, Azure made amazing items for the event too. From a crazy fur turban to intricate corsets. Oddly enough my favorite piece from her was the arrows which I thought were crazy adorable. I used them as hair chopsticks and random accessories for the next 2 looks that sue said was inspired by our state of hoboness in rl…

EPOCH Beast

The first look features Deviant Girl’s huuuge fur cape, which is so badass. I paired it with a more subtle pants piece from BALACLAVA and Toki Doki’s owl shirt that is available in the Creators’ Café.

The next look features Toki Doki’s leopard tunic and Sleepy Eddy’s Classic Safari Jacket which was one of the more popular clothing items for unisex wear. They are truly versatile and can be worn throughout the year in many various ways. The adorable mice headpiece comes from LaGyo which was my favorite item from her this time round.

For both looks I have on Leverocci’s new pair of Mesh Range Boots, they come in various colors and appears in their new Mesh store which is beautifully made! You guys should go over and check out their ombre selection of hair as well.

EPOCH Beast - Flower Baby!

Finally the header of this blog features all 3 colors of Deviant Girl’s Flower Baby suit which has a beast head as a hoodie. I thought this was a hilarious piece and I just looove the facial expression it has. Antebellum also has great facial hair that I was very tempted to sport in my looks but kinda got worried it would be too much. Either ways, they’re truly brilliant for mens!

EPOCH Legend Part II – Escher

Been a while since I touched blogging, lets see if I remember any of it at all. I’m more likely to do this more sporadically than ever, covering just events or what not. Mostly I wanted to spend some time doing some looks for the EPOCH Legend event which has been a great great success thus far! Thank you to Linden Lab for putting us in editor’s picks over at the destination guide! That really made me and sue’s day – plus of course all the organizers are just /thrilled/

Remember EPOCH Legend goes all the way till March 11th so there’s still time to check out the amazing venues and themes, plus the wonderful items from designers. I’m following what I usually do on flickr and keep the credits to a minimum of what I wish to feature. Everything else, feel free to ask in the comments or on flickr. I will reply to them asap!

EPOCH Escher I

My first look features a rather edited version of one of my favorite items from Escher – Nylon Outfitter’s Air and Water dress, I cut off the system skirt area to make this more of a top instead. The picture obviously doesn’t quite show its artistry as well as I would like but do hop on by and take a look at her vendor! It’s a really cute dress with Nylon’s usual amazing illustration inspired by Escher. The tights and bag both are from the event as well coming from ISON and Maitreya.

The second look is wearing Willow’s Picard Dress – Tessellations. I’m not sure if you guys have hopped on by the café to see Weezey’s picture up in the gallery. You simply must, it’s by far the prettiest creator picture I’ve seen, she looks stunning. The dress itself is cute too, with a short flare at the bottom, I wore it as a top matching it with a piece from outside of the event. Maitreya’s MCEHT Leggings is absolutely lovely! If you wore it just the way it is, you can really see the realistic highlights and shading that gives your booty quite the tooch.

And finally the last look shows 2byte’s Art of Escher denim shirt which is great for both guys and girls. I love the casual pieces for this event partly because they’re a lot more classic and wearable for the future. I layered Vita’s Boudoir skirt over Epoque’s to show it’s sheerness that is great for layering purposes.

I hope these looks show a way to transition the items from EPOCH over to usual daily SL, they’re truly a work of art from each and every participant <3 Yummy too has an amazing Escher ring that I failed to take a picture of properly, it’s one of the best accessories coming from Polyester <3

EPOCH Legend Part I – Landing Point

Update: EPOCH Open!

EPOCH Legend finally opens up to public tonight midnight SLT, I will update this post with a SURL once its up! From the earlier blogger previews I’ve learnt that some people get a lil confused about where the venues are etc and what the landing point is about. So I wanted to make a lil blog post just to kinda guide you guys around. At the same time, to showcase some of the work me and suetabulous did for the event. Most of the pictures are unedited in world shot taken with a windlight and shadow settings.

The landing point basically is an area that starts you off transitioning you from the ordinary SL life to the 3 different artistic themes the organizers have came up with. Most of the items in the landing point are made using mesh, so this guide might help you if you have trouble seeing these! Read the rest of the post for a huge picture spam!

You land on the town square so to speak, whereby a sign acts as a short cut holding the LMs to all 3 venues and the creators café. So if you’re in a rush or can’t see mesh, use those LMs to provide some ease to navigating the venues.

EPOCH Legend Landing Point Guide

The 3 different “Portals” to the venues are created such that they look like window displays. Suetabulous Yootz is the talented sculptor for all of them and she made it sooo easy for me to texture them. I finally manage to figure out how to bake and add lights in Maya so these were a little project for me to practice that.

Art of Escher
This portal was by far the funnest to take pictures of. Something about the 2d cutouts which I love in SL. To teleport to the venue you have to pick the right door, which really shouldn’t be difficult with the arrows and all. When you land in Escher – wait for the area to rez. It’s venue is within the building right in front of where you TPed. The venue was created by Uriah who I think is perfect as a builder for Escher, what with his fascination with numbers and calculators. jk jk :P

Beast
This portal was the last one we created, it was definitely inspired by Azure Electricteeth’s arrows and venue itself – which she created. We loved the idea of going into a dark cave and so this portal kinda transitions to that. Follow the beast and click on him to continue on your way to the Beast.

Clowning
Finally my favorite portal was for Clowning! This is the most interactive portal, run over and grab a wooden gun, stand behind the yellow line and shoot the ducks. If you take your aim right – you might end up in Nyasyousa Oh’s beautiful white tent whereby the Clowning theme is held. His venue is also available for sale and I can see it used for parties and weddings!

Radio Station
New FM 108.3 is a place me and sue made dedicated to Newreem who made an extensive playlist just to go on a loop within this café. We’ll be having music events with Newreem DJing as well so this station is made for her to feel at peace since she’s quite the nervous wreck :3

Cinema
This little Cinema is currently non functional but will start to once we get some machinima up in there. So we’ll have little theatres and you can tp into them from the doors – but for now it’s just a pretty display of lights.

Dressing Room
We’re really hoping this café would be a good spot for people to unwind and relax from the event. We have a little Dressing Room area for people to rez and unpack boxes. You can also use each of the dressing room to get yourself geared up with your new purchases. Reach this area from the outdoor toilets. Most of these have a privacy screen so if you’re in there, you can’t see outside. Obviously people can see you from outside though, just so they know which room is empty.

Café
And the left over pictures will all be shots and details from the café. Sue and I poured in our heart and soul making most of the furniture within it so I wanted to take some time to bask in ego :P Anywho! Click the boards on the walls to order drinks and grab yourself some freebie bread and what not. Anything in there you can click, you can get em for free!

The 2nd floor is a gallery that we’ll be updating consistently as the designers send in their self portraits. 52 Weeks of Color Week Nine : Silver

Did you guys hear? The first round of 52 Color Week Challenge is finally over, congrats to those who made it to the finishing line for all 52 weeks! But yes, my sentence said first… because the great thing is, Luna will be hosting a 2nd round of the challenge on Jan 1st, 2012! What an amazing way to start off the new year. I’m still not quite sure if I’ll be doing this round and complete it before attempting the 2nd, or just juggling both at one shot. So we’ll see what the new year brings! Anywho, here’s my attempt for Week 9′s Silver — the color of shiny metal.

Simply Falling…

Sometimes I have on a look in SL that I utterly love but I feel rather miffy about putting it on a blog because I feel perhaps it’s not complicated enough or not “mixed” enough. Then I have to give myself a mental slap and just go ahead and post it. These 3 looks today was somewhat a little bit of that. I wanted to showcase brand new items from Mon Tissu and Vive9 but I felt like no matter how I styled it, it looked better just simple and clean.

So I hope you guys would like this and not mind the simpleness!

Simply Falling... I

Mon Tissu recently released these Oxford Pencil skirts which are basically mesh pencil skirts making use of clothing layers. When I first heard of mesh moving along with our bodies in SL, I kept trying to think of how would mesh work with clothing layer so we don’t really forget our roots sorta? I like the traditional way of using system skirts or pants layer etc in creative new ways with newer SL technology — and I believe Mon Tissu did just that. Their pencil skirt is like an updated system skirt that moves and blends so well with your body, in a way where anyone of any size in SL would fit perfectly in it. So kudos to the hardworking designers in Mon Tissu, brilliant brilliant work!

At the same time, I’d like to highlight some new items from Vive9. I’m mainly wearing the tops they released and some of the clutches which are pure fashion love. Vive9 has always promised chic and updated styles for their clothing items and these are no exception. Great layering pieces for the fall that all of you guys should go check out.

One last thing I’d like to say is more mesh hair please! Lelutka‘s Yippie Hair is that brunette hair I’m wearing in my middle look. Look at the brilliant way it moves with different poses, truly incredible. I’ve seen tons of mesh hair coming up in a few hair designer’s portfolios and they’ve really been amazing in movement. But those hair require demoing for sure, because if it doesn’t fit you, there’s no way to mod it to fit because of the rigging.

Alphabet Challenge : G

I wanted to incorporated a little bit of HP love into my attempt on the Alphabet Challenge so I’ll be taking G, H, R and S for the four houses to do so. Gryffindor will start off with the letter G! I won’t be doing full on HP uniforms and such for these looks but more so a series of randomness and a few wizarding magic thrown in there. Hope this resonates with HP fans out there!

I never knew how challenging this challenge would be, it’s the letter G now and I’m slightly slow in terms of doing this on a weekly basis. Luckily the rules are fairly flexible so I can do as much or as little till I finish to the finishing letter Z. I would love to use the opportunity to show off some furniture items I have using this challenge too, so I’ll try to do that more often from now onwards.

52 Weeks of Color Week Eight: Green

I’ve been starting my 52 Weeks of Color Challenge late in the week recently cause it’s been crazy busy. But I decided to do it earlier on for week eight seeing I’m rather inspired today! I love when the colors are a little broader in terms of hues we can use, Green for example is extremely general. Thus, I tried to mix different hues of green to make it more pleasing for the eye.

52 Weeks of Color Week Seven: Cerise

I’m in such awe at you guys who have been doing Luna Jubilee’s Color Challenge from the start and are reaching the finishing end next week. Phew! That’s a long long journey and here I am still at Week 7. Applauding you guys who are now just doing a final sprint to the end.

I must admit Cerise was an unexpected surprise of a color to me, I truly had to scour my inventory for any color close to it cause I don’t own many of them. I ended up with a look that’s slightly more reddish Cerise than the Crayola version of it which is slightly Magenta. I do like it though, unexpected is always a good thing and since it’s called a challenge, gotta embrace the new!

Bang Bang Boom

I would just like to really first off say thank you to Miah McAuley and Rico Plisskin for being the sweetest designers ever by naming some of their creations with my SL name <3

Miah creator of Natural Beauty recently sent me Anya saying that she wanted to create a sweet soft skin and I really loved how it turned out, i’m wearing it in both looks today and just thank you so much! I’ve never worn Natural Beauty skins before but this really peaked my interest and I’ll be demoing more of her skins in the future there’s a soft angelic quality to this skin that I really love. I know that’s pretty ironic since my looks aren’t super angelic whatsoever — gun and all…

Rico on the other hand contacted me about eye suggestions hoping to create some brand new eyes for his store Aphotic Gloom. He created a lovely rendition of an idea I had and will be selling these in Chic Fashionably Late and in his store as well. The eyes turned out exactly what I envisioned, having a muted light grey and then flecks of multiple tons in the middle which gives it so much dimension. I’ve turned this into my default eyes for my RP Character over at H:YS. I initially found out about Aphotic Gloom from Gogo’s blog and I’ve been using his eyes regularly in my blog posts now. So if you guys are looking for high quality gorgeous eyes, please take a look at his wares! (I’m wearing his eyes from this set in both looks, but the Anya one is used in the 2nd look)

!Ohmai Faux Pygmy Vest Available for Seasons Hunt Summer 2011

Seasons Hunt is here yet again, and this being the final Seasons Hunt, I really wanted to make something that would be classic and can be worn all throughout the years of Autumn/Fall. So again, this shall be the final Seasons Hunt which Hallie Galli has so professionally pulled together. I made a Fur Vest that obviously came inspired whilst making my Pygmy Puffs, ever since I had an experience making the fur of that animal, I’ve been dying to do fur related clothing… so glad I got a chance with this hunt.

Hi hi! I’ve been having a high fever lately so I had to take some time off blogging, coupled with exams coming up, been craazzeeee… But I decided to set aside some time to finish off challenges. I’m really proud to present the clothes in this look, because they’re done with love and hardwork from my rl sister — suetabulous Yootz. Together with Newreem Waffle we’ve came up with several looks featuring different items from Beetlebones’s new store branch in Existence.

These new releases are only available in that store for now, and they are all mesh items. So make sure you have a mesh viewer to be able to wear em! There are demos out for you to try them on before purchasing too and if you’re not sure if you can view mesh, please enter the store and spot a deer head hanging on the wall. This first set from Newreem and I features Beetlebone’s Loose Pocket Tank. The tank comes in 12 different colors in both sheer and solid versions. This tank has a baggy slouchy cut and with mesh, it moves with our body really well. Newreem has on the Mint version and me the White.

The next look from Newreem is her in Beetlebone’s Semi-Sheer Cropped Lace Tank in Cream. It comes in 16 different color options and this tank has lace detailing at the back, which really goes well with layering with different pieces. The shape of it also allows you to wear poofy skirts like the one Newreem has on.

We move onto the next item which is the Lucille Pleated Silk Gown, the next 2 looks both feature this gown in different colors. Mine being the Mint version and Newreem’s the Peach version. Both of us did very feminine looks for this gown and it seemed the most appropriate with it’s delicate pleats.

Once again, this is another look using the Semi-Sheer Cropped Lace Tank, this shows the lace detail on the back of the tank. Mesh allows this lace detail to work extremely well for layering and if it had been sculpted prims, it might not quite flow the way that it does. This is one of my favorite piece from Beetlebone’s new set of release.

Finally the last set we feature sue’s Aztec Hotshorts – the cut of this is extremely short, but the print and texture of it keeps it interestingly different. There’s 10 colors for this piece, 5 lighter tones and 5 darker ones. Newreem has on the Taupe version and for me I’m wearing Mint yet again. Truly an interesting piece to have in your wardrobe.

Eleanor Rigby Opening!

Kyrsten Jigsaw owner of rbcg and now brand new branch of her store — eleanor rigby! This store opened just yesterday and true to rbcg’s old appeal, they have released a ton of adorable accessories ranging from clogs, glasses to necklaces and earrings. However, they also carry a few denim pieces, tops and dresses for fashionistas who prefer clothes over accessories.

In all 3 looks in my blog post today, I feature items from eleanor rigby, the colors of some of their pieces border on a neon pastel which recently caught my eye lately. I love the clogs as well, those look uber comfy and casual. Which is why the looks as well are very casual and simple.

Light As Air

On a lighter note from the previous post, I wanted to share some brand new items from the grid. First is Emery’s brand new Oversize Cardigan Carmin, and then Burley a hair store that’s one to look out for and finally vive9’s reopening!


Emery released a bunch of new items, which carry their trademark stylishness and easy mix and match appeal. For this post, I really wanted to try and style 3 different looks from their Oversize Cardigan Carmin that has a leopard print on it in various unique colors. I love Emery’s sense of color palette, it changes every collection they do but always on trend with the season.

All my shoes come from vive9 a store that recently reopened their main store. There are 3 new hairs and 2 new shoes from them, and all their releases are super stylish. I love that vive9 always gets what the grid wants, their items are always very appealing to the fashion crowd in SL and these releases are no exception.

Finally, for the first and second look, I’m wearing new released hair from Burley a store that’s definitely churning out some really interesting and unique styles. I’m in love with the Ana style that is a long bohemian looking hair with a headband style.

Steve Jobs – A Light of Our Generation

Again, you can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.

Before I go on ahead and move to my next post blogging about clothes in SL, I wanted to take the time to truly write what I’ve been thinking about since the death of Steve Jobs. I don’t know the man personally, but in some point in time, his actions have touched my life. Most of it is just me remembering what Steve Jobs has done with his life through his business history. So pardon the absolute no correlation of it with the rest of my post blog posts in general and feel free to skip through.

I’m not a huge fan of the major I’m studying in school (Business) and I wish I had taken a different road and did something art related. Nonetheless 2 years ago I met a turning point in my life in which I decided that, hell with it, I’m close to finishing, let’s just finish this race. So I decided to change my initial Management concentration to Marketing. This was the time when I finally found myself rather interested in what school has to offer, since Marketing bridges the gap of artistic creativity and logical business. In every single marketing class I’ve taken as a senior, Steve Jobs was a man we always talked about, revered and respected. He was the inspiration and icon for many marketers in my class and I was not an exception.

Steve Jobs was not only inspiring for marketers or tech geeks or creative minds, but as a human being, he was also one to be remembered. Born out of a wedlock, put up for adoption and dropped out from college, I mean – not the worst of situations, but definitely not a life that’s absolutely perfect. But yet on April Fools Day of 1976, he and Steve Wozniak just twenty something at that time, decided to enter the computing industry. Their main aim to bring as easy to use computer to the market and quickly by the end of the 1980s they became one of America’s golden companies. Take note however, Apple was not the first to invent the computer, not even the first to make a personal computer – but they were able to make a software that was easily understandable for the masses. When IBM entered the PC Market in 1981, together with some mistakes that the company made, Apple headed on a downward spiral and Jobs was forced to leave Apple in 1985.

However if anyone watched Job’s Stanford Commencement speech, one would know that during the time of his leaving the company he went on to start up 2 other extremely successful company (PIXAR and NeXT). This shows a man unbounded by the failures in life and continuing to pursue the things he loved to do. As Apple continued on a downward fall, Jobs was rehired as a CEO in 1997. From then onwards Apple took a turnaround and headed right back into success, the way we currently see them. The success mainly in the way they redefined the way we thought about many things that were already in the market, music players… phones… computers. Apple did not invent anything absolutely new, but they always stick to their “Think Different” motto, making anything they touch commercialized for the general masses to understand and comprehend. And that was the genius of it, finding simplicity in the complicated.

I guess after talking about all this history and what not. The main thing I got out from this man’s life, is that no matter what set backs he met on the way, he overcame them and emerged more victorious than ever. He told stories with his work and his light will continue to inspire the dreamers and thinkers for all the generations ahead of us.

I only knew about the company Apple when I came to the United States when I was 16. I bought my first Apple computer not long after and fell in love, fell in love with this laptop that embraced the idea that design was a crucial element in every product. That ease of use was more important to the masses than complicated software widgets. Of course, not everyone would appreciate the appeal that Apple products had, and I am by no means forcing anyone to do so. But I, personally, felt like this product has been designed and made just for me – and that was the beauty of it.

The words that he said during the Stanford commencement touched my life at a point where I was feeling very low about myself. He reminded us that in life, nothing else matters but living it with no regrets. I don’t think I can put it any better but by quoting the words that he said:

“Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart…

…Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

And just those words alone prove what a great man he was, a man who imparted many innovations and ideas along the way of his life. He wanted to “put a ding in the universe” and that was exactly what he did. Inspiring us to all “Think Different” and just head to the path we all know and love to take.

With that, I hope that even though you might not be an Apple fan or a Pixar fan, his words will still inspire you even in the smallest of ways. He was a beautiful man and the world has lost a great soul, but yet his light will forever be a beacon for our generation to follow on.

An Elegant Girly Package

I’m absolutely in love with Mothergoose‘s latest Yu III Skin, the face is just adorable to bits! I wanted to do some feminine girly looks to match the ‘feel’ of the skin and that’s basically all there is about this post. I don’t have much to add cause I’ve recently been addicted desperately to Glitch. If you guys are playing that, feel free to add me as well. I blame Newreem for this insane addiction…

Oh! This post also showcases 2 styles of hair from JUNWAVE– a store that has been dear to me since my first hair in SL was technically from them. They’re unfortunately closing their store October 24th, so if you guys want to grab some final items before they’re lost from the grid forever, do drop by.

At the same time, I just heard that 69 is closing as well *SOBS* so that will have to be another hair store you need to drop by too. It’s sad to see all these amazing talented people leave the grid, but I hope that with their talents and passion, wherever they go in RL will be as successful as it was in SL <3

Both looks feature 2 items from Fishy Strawberry, Fae’s recent works have been beautiful. All of them carry a very girly elegant quality to it, without losing the fun trendiness of what Fae usually does with her items. I really like the other colors available for the first Plisse Dress I’m wearing (especially the coral one!) but I decided to show the beige version for this look, trying to keep a more muted color palette.

!Ohmai Friday Saturday Pullovers 4.44.444

For all you long-timers in SL, I’m sure one point in time Free*Style is a blog that you frequent pretty regularly. This blog has helped me a ton as a newbie, and then even more so when they hired me as a writer there — my time in Free*Style has been nothing but amazing and the people running it is truly a blessing for the grid. Today they’re celebrating their 4th anniversary on SL and what better way but to host an event celebrating it?

Free*Style‘s 4th Anniversary Event also known as 4.44.444 is currently on the way and every item in the event space is either 4L, 44L or 444L. I personally contributed with a simple striped pullover that comes in 4 color packs (each pack contains a solid and a striped version). Beetlebones (suetabulous yootz) has also created some lovely mesh skirt for the event too!

Alphabet Challenge : D

Sorry for the weird Blog malfunction yesterday! I forgot to do a little bit of updating, so my bad! I hope everything shows up now, if you’re reading this then it certainly should and big yay \o/. Onto the Alphabet Challenge this week.

When I was doing D, I had to hold myself back a little cause I wanted to do so much. First I had the idea of D for dolls, since I got mocha’s adorable doll house from Choice 2011. That didn’t quite work out, then I wanted to do D is for Deer but I ended up with a very mismatched outfit. So I settled for D stands for Dream… the idea of being in my dream room with things that I love and incorporating some of the other ideas I had in mind. I ended up getting to wear some really old items that I never worn enough off, so some of these are retired items unfortunately. But I still hope it’ll bring back some memories or shed some light on some vintage SL items.

Alphabet Challenge: D

With the letter D, I finally get to wear DrLife‘s skin “Ju” — I’m not a big fan of their desaturated skin tones, but this face is just stunning and its my favorite skin from not only them but out of a lot of my more realistic skins as well. I like that it’s very oriental, but at the same time looks mixed, the racial ambiguity is so pretty <3 My hair comes from DEJAVU which is no longer on the grid anymore. This brand used to be one of my favorites back when I initially started blogging, their styles were always very brave and BIG, this one in particular was my favorite from them.

I’ve worn some items from Duboo as well, made by darling Newreem who recently closed all her stores in SL. She will be moving to the marketplace for the time being, but at the moment she’s still getting some vendors reshot. So patience, patience! What I love about Newreem’s item aside from her being one of the greatest SL friends of mine, is that she never forgets that SL is all about being fun and playful. Her items never fail to bring a smile on my face.

Speaking about fun and playful, D-lab is another brand I simply had to put in for this Alphabet. D-lab is one of my biggest inspirations in SL, especially when it comes to creating adorable and fun animals/objects. My flying pig (Hamilton) has been with me since the very start of my life in SL and i’m glad he’s still flying about from time to time.

Finally, these chairs come from cluttered flowey and they’re a rather new release as well. I’m glad Flutter is making furnitures and skyboxes now at the same time incorporating her poses into them because flowey’s poses were definitely some of my favorite natural ones. These chairs come with various animated and static poses, and it has a great vintage feel to it.

52 Weeks of Color Week Four: Plum

I remember the first time around when I did the color Plum, I was very hesitant about it. I’m not super fond of purples, but doing this color during the fall season helps a lot especially since designers are releasing so many richly deep colored things to keep in tune with the colder months. This time around, I was definitely a lot more willing to ease into the color.

The color posted on Luna’s blog is a lighter shade of plum, I decided to go with a deep plum which you usually find on the fruit itself. This time around, I also added other colors into the look to ease out the monochromatic palette~

This cropped cardigan comes from TokiDoki, a brand new item with an adorable name — “Bellybutton Cardigan” heh. I really like the fabric on it, it really seems to pop right off the screen. The shoes I worn are not new items, but one that I’m glad I finally got the opportunity to wear. It comes from Willow and the studded details really edge out the casualness of the shape.
